Kaptajn Kaper i Kattergat (called Privateer in an English language release) was long thought to be the oldest released Danish video game for home computers. This has turned out to not be the case but it holds special significance to many, for whom it was the first Danish language game they were introduced to, be it on school computers or through sharing the game between each other.
The game was originally distributed via purchases of computers at DanaData a Danish home computer store. The licensing on the game allows for it to be freely redistributed under an ealry donationware license, as users are asked to donate 50 DKK to the developer's, Peter Ole Frederik's, personal bank account if they enjoyed the game. A further 300 DKK could be sent for a copy of the source code.
This is the oldest known version of the game (version 1 release 2). It was donated to The Royal Danish library by Thorbjørn Stegelmann, and was gotten with the purchase of a computer around 1986/1987, after which he also contacted Peter Ole Frederiksen to purchase a copy of the source code.
It was selected as the first game in the proposed Danish Game Canon for its cultural significance.
The Game was developed on an IBM PC XT running PC DOS 1.1. As far as we can tell it was released in 1985.
